I’ve got a love/hate relationship with Holland.

On one side, Holland is amazing because things work! The tram arrives on time, and even the tax letters are punctual!
But on the other side, if you’re feeling down, the weather can make you feel even worse. There’s no escaping it: at least ten months of rain a year and endless grey skies.
What I miss in Holland is the spontaneous dance-offs and street music. I miss hearing my neighbours fighting, laughing – just living out loud!

Honestly, this country is so respectful that it feels like the walls are closing in on me.
Last night, I heard loud noises above me, and I was convinced it was a domestic dispute. But no, it was the rare occasion of Holland winning a game in the European Cup, and people were excited. If I had a remote control, I would have played that sound in slow motion.
When you move to Holland, you think it’s the most open-minded country, and in many ways, it is. But there are so many rules and restrictions that it can feel stifling.
There’s a politeness that’s overwhelming, and people seem to wear a mask to hide their frustrations. “You go first,” “No, you go first,” in the supermarket, but then they’re sprinting down the aisles as if there’s no food left.
Where are the jealousy crises? Where are the cries? Where is the passion? I can’t write this without sounding like I’m seeking trouble, but I wish I lived in a place where being outside in the square at midnight was normal, where kids played outside until 11 in the summer. I’m Latin! What can I do?
